The birthplace of King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I, the Royal Borough of Greenwich is one of only four London boroughs to be awarded Royal Borough status.

The Queen granted this honour to Greenwich in 2012, in recognition of the town’s historic royal links and pre-eminent status as a Unesco World Heritage Site, the home of the Prime Meridian,Greenwich Mean Time, the Old Royal Naval College and the National Maritime Museum.

Greenwich holds a unique and important status in the world, every place on earth is measured in terms of its distance east or west from the Greenwich Meridian, the home of time. With a global standard set by the Royal Observatory, Greenwich sets its own pace, creates its own atmosphere and has its own unique spirit.
